5 Simple steps to switching Broadband Below is a simple guide on how to switch your broadband provider to avoid any loss of service, and ensure you don't get stung for any additional costs:
Firstly consider do you need to get a new phone line installed. For instance if you don't have a BT line installed in your home and you wish to switch to an ADSL provider (e.g. AOL, BT) from a cable provider, then you'll need to get a new BT line installed, which could cost you anywhere up to an additional £125 on top of your broadband charges. Check with BT for details on 0808 100 5152 or go to BT Reconnect for more details. This should be provided by your existing ISP within 5 working days (To get your MAC code click here, link to Get MAC code tool) Once you have got a MAC code, order your broadband service online through one of the links below, and enter your MAC code when requested. MAC codes are valid for 30 days once issued. Your new service provider will then contact your existing service provider to inform them of the switch, and your account should be switched over in around 6 to 10 working days to your new service provider with no down turn of service, unless notified.
If you are wishing to switch from a DSL operator to a Cable provider, and your property does not have a fiber optic line installed, then you may be charged a small fee. In the case of Virgin this is a one off fee of £30. Lastly, beware that you are not still in contract with your existing service provider, as they may try to charge you a cancellation fee for ceasing your service early, but they will notify you of this when you are requesting your MAC code. If you don’t want to pay the cancelation fee and are still in contract, take a note of the date your contract expires and look to switch then.
